These tips include actionable strategies for identifying your niche, creating consistent and engaging content, and growing your online presence. Whether you’re just starting or looking to refine your influencer status, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice to help you stand out in the digital world.
Let’s picture Bob, a well-meaning person wanting to become an influencer. Bob did some online research and thought he knew how to become an influencer. Yes, he assumed it would be easy, and if your initial impression of Bob is that he’s a bit clueless, you guessed right!
Bob finds that personal training is a big market so he decides to brand himself as Bob is no longer a Blob. He starts his influencer journey by flooding his social media with endless posts about his new passion, oblivious to his friends’ perception of him as a couch potato, he didn’t connect the dots!
A quick look through the pictures on his social media timeline doesn’t find Bob working out. To be truthful, his past resembles anything but exercise!
Undaunted or unaware, and armed with his smartphone, Bob sets out to create engaging content. He films himself while attempting new exercises and shares his failures. When will it dawn on Bob that his expertise is eating ice cream not exercising?
Finally, Bob reaches out to exercise equipment companies with grandiose plans for sponsored content, only to receive polite rejections and puzzled looks from the marketing teams. After all, Bob is still a blob!
Bob’s example is full of mistakes such as trying to be someone he is not just because there is a big market for it. You should always be authentic, not try to be someone else.
You need to find the niche where the real you intersects with a niche market, and you will attract followers interested because of your authenticity! Read the advice below and begin your unique journey!
Personal branding is creating and promoting a distinct image or identity for yourself that sets you apart from others. It involves defining and consistently communicating your unique value proposition, expertise, personality, and vision across various platforms and interactions. For influencers, personal branding is not just about marketing themselves; it’s about crafting a narrative that resonates with their audience and building a loyal community. This process requires authenticity, clarity, and a strategic approach to highlight what makes you unique and valuable in your niche.
A strong personal brand can create trust, credibility, and a deeper connection with the audience—vital for engagement and influence.
For instance, Gary Vaynerchuk, with his brand centered around entrepreneurship and hustle, has built a massive following by consistently sharing valuable content and engaging authentically with his audience. Similarly, Marie Forleo’s brand, focusing on personal development and business, has made her a trusted mentor for many aspiring entrepreneurs. These examples show that a well-crafted personal brand can significantly enhance an influencer’s ability to impact and grow their audience.
To identify your niche, start by exploring your passions and strengths. Consider what topics you are genuinely interested in and knowledgeable about. Reflect on the areas where you can provide unique insights or value. Additionally, pay attention to market demand and audience interests. By aligning your passion and strengths with audience needs, you can carve out a niche that is both fulfilling and strategically advantageous.
Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP) is a clear statement that describes your unique skills, achievements, and personal stories that resonate with your audience. Showcase these unique attributes across all your platforms and content. Use clear, concise language and visual elements that reinforce your brand identity. This clarity and consistency will help build a strong personal brand that stands out and attracts a loyal following.
Consistency in branding involves using the same logo, colors, and tone of voice across all your social media platforms and other online channels. Consistent branding helps reinforce your identity and makes it easier for your audience to recognize and connect with you. To maintain this consistency, develop a branding guide that outlines your visual and verbal style. Stick to a color palette and font choices that reflect your brand’s personality.
Optimizing Your Social Media Profiles
There are a number of great articles and posts online about setting up profiles like this one by Hubspot. The general steps are as follows:
A well-planned strategy with a content calendar, which outlines what content you will publish and when, helps you maintain a steady flow of posts, avoid last-minute scrambles, and ensure a balanced mix of content types. Include educational content that provides value and insights, entertaining content that engages and delights your audience, and promotional content that highlights your products or services. Balancing these different types of content keeps your audience interested and helps build a deeper connection with them.
Focus on addressing your audience’s needs and interests. Provide actionable tips, share compelling stories, and use visuals to enhance your message. Use tools and resources like Canva and Adobe Spark to create professional-looking graphics, infographics, and videos that stand out. These tools offer templates and easy-to-use features that make content creation accessible, even if you don’t have a design background. Additionally, pay attention to the quality of your text, ensuring it is well-written, free of errors, and aligned with your brand’s voice. Regularly review and analyze your content’s performance to identify what resonates most with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Create content that resonates with your target audience and encourages interaction. Encourage comments, shares, and discussions around your posts by asking questions or prompting feedback. Responding to comments and direct messages (DMs) is crucial as it shows your audience that you value their input and are genuinely interested in their thoughts. This interaction not only boosts engagement but also helps build a loyal community. Use social media features like polls, live videos, and stories to engage your audience in real time and keep the conversation dynamic.
Partnering with others in your niche, known to some as co-opetition, can tap you into their audience and attract new followers interested in similar content. Collaborations can take various forms, such as joint social media campaigns, guest appearances on each other’s platforms, or co-creating content.
When approaching potential partners, be clear about the mutual benefits and how the collaboration aligns with both parties’ goals. Building strong relationships through networking can also lead to long-term partnerships and opportunities for cross-promotion.
Monetizing Your Influence
Common monetization strategies include sponsored posts, where brands pay you to promote their products or services; affiliate marketing, where you earn a commission for sales generated through your referral links; and selling your own products or services, such as merchandise, digital products, or consulting. When negotiating with brands, it’s crucial to know your worth and set rates that reflect your influence and engagement levels. Create a media kit that outlines your reach, niche, and past collaborations to present a professional and compelling case to potential sponsors.
Followers detect insincere endorsements quickly, which damages your credibility and relationship with them. You cannot do this, for your followers are your market.
Only promote products and services that align with your brand values and genuinely benefit your audience. When you endorse a product or service, clearly explain why you think it will be helpful to some of your followers.
Be transparent about sponsored content and disclose partnerships to maintain honesty. Avoid common pitfalls like overloading your feed with promotional content or endorsing products you haven’t tried. Integrate sponsored content seamlessly into your usual posting schedule to keep the trust and loyalty of your followers intact.
The Dos and Don’ts of How To Become an Influencer
Your followers are your business. Once you have connected with them by being authentic, stay authentic. Your goal is to provide them with value even when monetizing. Never do anything to ruin your connection with your audience. Protect it at all costs.
You can sell a course but also provide value for free, too. If you do not deliver value in your niche through your main channel or omni-channel content to your followers there’s nothing to follow.
When you make an offer to your followers, tell them why. For example, if you sell merch, when you offer it during a pre-recorded or live show (or in your blog), be sure to tell your followers, “Visit our site and buy some merch because that helps us to afford to continue to make this great content!”
In other words, be authentic and then sell your authenticity subtly. Don’t beat them over the head with it but remind your audience why they like and follow you.
The subject of how to become an influencer isn’t a simple one. But it is doable by anyone with an interest, a skill, or a journey they want to share as long as you do not try to portray yourself as an expert in something you are learning. People enjoy following those moving toward a goal, especially if the content is entertaining.
Whether your content is about entertaining an audience as a comedian, a how-to like building something or homesteading, educational, or about a special interest, providing value and protecting your followers are the keys.
