“Passover – Expect the Unexpected and It Will Happen” is the subject of this special podcast episode, in honor of the upcoming Jewish holiday of Passover in the weekly “The Rabbi Who Got Rich on Sunday” podcast. We will skip the next two weeks because of all the religious holidays.
I love working with people who have a fire in their belly to make great things happen, and sometimes, because they expect to be successful, they succeed even though the experts would say it is impossible.
Michael Jordan was perhaps the most spectacular basketball player when I was growing up. He would take off like an airplane and somehow traverse great distances and go around and over obstacles to dunk the ball in the basket. He would make shots under tremendous pressure, and it would appear as if he didn’t even know there was any pressure.
A colleague of mine once sat on a plane next to him and asked him what was going through his mind when he made his comeback after retiring and hit the winning shot that made the Chicago Bulls world champions once again. He said that he was not thinking at all; he had made that shot in practice so many times that it was automatic.
Yes, this is the perfect story for practicing, but to everyone on the outside looking in, Michael expected the unexpected and made it happen.
Recently I coached two people in business in Canada. One is an experienced salesperson with a lot of previous success and a huge sphere of influence. The second person is a new immigrant to the country and knows almost no one.
The first person made up excuse after excuse and failed miserably every time he approached someone, and quit after a month.
The second person achieved success in her first month, even though it was mostly cold approaches, and did not even realize that she had worked hard.
She expected the unexpected and even though it didn’t happen as smoothly as we hoped, it did happen.
Passover is a holiday all about the underdog i.e. the Jewish People who were enslaved to the world power of the time, Egypt, and the Miracles the Almighty wrought to bring them to freedom.
No one among the Jewish people expected this to happen except for one person, and no, I’m not talking about Moses or his brother Aaron. The only one who expected this miracle of miracles was Miriam, the older sister.
Miriam’s parents and all the other Jewish parents stopped having children because the leader of Egypt, Pharaoh had decreed death to all the male babies.
Miriam expected that the unexpected would actually happen, and convinced her parents to reunite and that resulted in the birth of Moses.
Moses’s parents expected he would be killed and put him in a basket in the Nile River and gave up hope.
Miriam expected he would be saved and was the only one who watched as the basket was retrieved by Pharaoh’s daughter.
Miriam continued to watch over Moses, and the rest is history.
Be like Miriam and expect the unexpected and it will happen!
I have been in various businesses since 1982. I have tried and failed more than most people have even thought about trying. Every single time I’ve tried, I expected to succeed. Most of my greatest successes have come after trying to succeed multiple times over many years, each time thinking this would be the time it works, until eventually, my efforts succeeded.
I’ve been “lucky” or perhaps the Almighty has made miracles for me but I see success on a constant basis over and over again. I keep trying when others give up and I think the key to my success is that every time I expect the unexpected. I expect that this time will be the winner. You know what? When you have an idea that wins, all the times you thought you would win but didn’t are just not so important!
I have a lot of colleagues who have burned out, retired, pulled to the side of the road, or plain given up. They didn’t have more failures than I did. They just stopped expecting success.
I’m not saying that I don’t keep a rein on my emotions, I do, or I would also burn out. I expect success, but I don’t let myself get excited until I see the success happening or at leat beginning to happen, then I’m all in!
Don’t let anything stop you. Expect the unexpected, for it does happen!
Have a happy Passover or just a happy next two weeks. I believe that the unexpected success you desire is just over the other side of tomorrow!
